Description

Peter began carving this piece in 2012 but little did we know at the time that it would become quite so poignant. The crab is wonderfully tactile and has the most amazing attention to detail underneath. I think the best description of the reason for this beautifully observed work of art comes from collector Mike Reikowsky…

‘Pete and I would like to share a story of happiness and sadness about one of our dear friends and HK enthusiasts, Danny Kritzer of Hampton, VA – who lost his battle with colon cancer in October. Obviously, that’s the sad part of this tale. But from great sadness can come great joy. So let’s go back a bit and remember a better time…

For those of you fortunate to have attended a Harmony Kingdom convention you may recall that Pete has always had his little book of ideas that he carried with him to jot down suggestions for new pieces. Well, for close to 15 years Danny tried to convince Pete to carve a Horseshoe Crab. We would often find the Horseshoe Crab shells left behind on the beaches of the Chesapeake Bay. Pete resisted because he likes to carve animals that have a face and if you happen to look at a Horseshoe Crab closely, you will quickly realize it doesn’t really have one. But Dan persisted year after year. Now jump forward to April 2012…I, Mike Reikowsky, Danny’s partner and best friend approached Pete to discuss the possibility of carving this piece for Danny’s 50th birthday on January 8th, 2013.

So the idea took form, Pete got to work, and life went on. Unfortunately, and much to our sad surprise, we lost Danny on October 27th 2012, but as Danny was a constant source of joy and happiness to everyone who knew him, we decided to continue that legacy and turn this great loss into something positive for the Harmony Kingdom world that Danny loved so dearly. Danny was also a great champion for the charities that he supported… he was always leading the charge to raise money for the American Diabetes Association when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2009. Danny will be in our hearts and thoughts forever.’

Mike

So, after talking with Mike, Pete and I have decided to release this Horseshoe Crab Pendant directly to the Harmony Kingdom community. To keep the costs down and enable us to donate some of the proceeds to charity in memory of Danny, we will sell it directly from our website. $5 of each piece sold will be donated to the American Diabetes Association in Danny’s name to continue his legacy in raising money for charity.

This piece will be a timed edition, available to order online beginning on January 8th 2013 (the anniversary of Danny’s birthday) and will retire on October 27th 2013 (the anniversary of Danny’s passing). The Pendant will retail for $30 (£18.75) plus postage and handling. It will be cast in a bronze cold-cast finish and will come with a cord to enable it to be worn. To keep international shipping costs to a minimum, we will wait until we have several orders before we ship the pieces in larger batches so when you place your order, it may be a few weeks before you receive your piece. If you require it more urgently, please let us know and we will endeavour to help.

We hope that you all will cherish this labour of love as much as we do…and hope that It will help spark happy memories of a very dear friend who has been a big part of the Harmony Kingdom world for so many years.

NOTE: THIS PIECE ONLY IS AVAILABLE FOR ONLINE ORDERING AND DELIVERY TO BOTH USA AND UK CUSTOMERS.
